News Garcia Cumini talk about Pipe
At Salone del Mobile 2022 – Pav 12 E01
Pipe is contemporary and classic at the same time. How do you get to this delicate balance?
Through a process of careful selection. It is part of the philosophy and design code of our studio to create objects that can last over time, but which are at the same time a mirror of the historical moment in which they are devised and designed. The different eras are defined by typical features and archetypes that often linger for a long time. This is our goal even when we produce seats.
How important is research for this project?
Research, both at the design and manufacturing level, is fundamental and is to be conducted both independently and with the company: a project is the result of both components. The combination of expertise and different points of view always creates a great deal of inspiration. In Pipe, the ring that separates and joins the back leg to the element that rises to support the back has a decorative but also structural function. It highlights a wooden joint that is the result of advanced technological research and makes it possible to avoid crosspieces.
Pipe represents “slow design.” In what terms?
It all started with study and in-depth research, then we moved on to the proposal. The research stemmed from the sociological analysis of users’ habits in order to find a unique trait that can make the product recognizable. Pipe points to an object of ancient tradition, symbol of an ability to enjoy life slowly, drawing satisfaction from beautiful things.
The study of materials, the use of technology, the goal to overcome some challenges posed by woodworking have allowed us to discover how far we can go and create an elegant seat that, like a good pipe, is intended to last a lifetime.
